MOUNT VERNON participated in an all-private car special excursion train from Pittsburgh PA through the coal country of southwestern Pennsylvania to Cliff WV and return. This rare mileage trip over the former Monangahela Railway was operated to raise funds for the Broad Way Historic Preservation Conservancy to support their efforts to preserve ALTO tower at Altton PA. MOUNT VERNON traveled from New York to Pittsburgh on Amtrak's Pennsylvanian the day before the excursion, and from Pittsburgh back to New York on the day after the excursion.
